pmp, perforce, clearcase, clearquest, unemployment
Thanks for the Invitation to the PerForce Group.
However, I have no idea what to discuss here as I have never used PerForce and doubt very much I ever will. After 10 years of experience with ClearCase and ClearQuest, I have been unemployed for 18 months now, and my COBRA ends this Friday, May 6th. I got very tired of applying for jobs where I have been run over by the technology revolution. I am also tired of recruiters who contact me and do not do their... Read full post

software configuration management tools
I think this is the 5th time I've had to figure this out in the past few years, so this time I'm going to preserve it here for posterity
The problem is usually one or more of:
You have files missing from your workspace that need replaced.
You have locally modified (i.e. not opened for edit) files that need replaced.

customizing the firefox installer on windows
One of the questions I get asked a lot is how to customize the Firefox installer on Windows and how to bundle extensions with it. I’ve spent the past few days learning a great deal about this subject, so I thought I would take this opportunity to provide a refresher on working with the Firefox installer on Windows. I’m going to do it as a Q&A so hopefully folks will get answers to the common questions they have.
Standard disclaimer: Under no circumstances should you use... Read full post

build the document management system
Employees never feel at ease under a boss who doesn’t trust them or whom they don’t trust. In the absence of mutual trust productivity falls as the employees get into politics, covering their backs and other inefficient activity. Not trusting each other will affect confidence, which leads to a deterioration in customer satisfaction as the environment shifts from the business needs to internal wrangling.
So, let’s look at some key qualities a document management system... Read full post

clean, build, clean build, link project, post-process, build platform
Following are the steps for a complete clean build:
1.
Build project (compilation)—In the build phase, the build system compiles operating system (OS) component source files and produces libraries. The basic unit of componentization in Windows CE is the library—components are not conditionally compiled. Because of this, components can be mixed and matched without worrying about changes in their behavior.
2.
Link project—During the link phase,... Read full post

Identification, control, audit, and status accounting are the four basic requirements for a software configuration management system. These requirements must be satisfied regardless of the amount of automation within the SCM process. All four may be satisfied by an SCM tool, a tool set, or a combination of automated and manual procedures.
Identification—Each software part is labeled so that it can be identified. Furthermore, there will be different versions of the software parts as... Read full post

One of the trends being discussed in business, among vendors and in the analyst community is the importance of automating the functions performed by IT. Growing demands by the business, tight budgets and compliance pressures together accentuate the need for IT to be more agile, efficient and responsive to business stakeholders. Naturally, vendors rush into this environment, each touting the unique benefits of its solution set and the urgency to move forward immediately. A key area... Read full post
